Castle Requirements

You are to use your creativity to build a castle from boxes. Look at pictures of castles to get ideas. there are many books and Internet sites that have pictures, construction ideas, and tips. Use a variety of boxes, toilet paper tubes, paper milk cartons, etc. Build your castle by gluing the different boxes together.

Your assignment is due March 28, 2011. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE! Castles will be deducted a full grade for each day that they're late. They will not be accepted after March 31, 2011. NO EXCEPTIONS! If you are sick, have someone bring your castle to the school. If you have a vacation planned, turn your castle in before leaving. The castle will be 60% of your grade for the Middle Ages. DO NOT TURN IT IN LATE!

In order to earn a C grade, you must have the following:

bailey
keep
curtain/towers
drawbridge

In order to earn a B grade, you must have the items for the C grade plus:

moat
portcullis
gatehouse
barbican
arrow loops
crenelation
oubliette

In order to earn an A, you must have the items for the C/B castle plus:

chapel
stables
well
murder holes
postern gate
garderobe
great hall
solar

For an A, you MUST have a cut away!

For extra credit, add other features of a castle, small models of weapons like a trebuchet, or make your castle a part of a diorama with the surrounding landscape.

MAKE SURE TO LABEL ALL PARTS OF YOUR CASTLE!

Do not make your castle any larger than the top of your desk and do not use food.

Your castle should be built and nearly finished by March 17.

If you need help, talk to me EARLY so that I can help you during lunch recess or after school. Do not tell me that you need help two days before it's due.

I'm expecting quality work and evidence of some research. Get your family and friends to help you. Use your creativity! Have fun with this assignment!

If you have further questions, ask during class.

Language Arts: TIME IS RUNNING OUT!Students have until Monday, February 28, to improve the scores on their essays on myaccess.com. Remember a score of "4.2" =70%, which = 70/100 points, which = a "C". Any score less than that is an "NI". There are four essays that will be on this term's report card. Each essay is worth 100 points. As you can see, these essays will play a significant part in determining the Language Arts grade that will be on the report card for Parent/Teacher Conferences on March 9-10, 2011.

Students were introduced to a new writing assignment on Tuesday, February 22, "A Day In Ancient Pompeii." This is a narrative piece of writing and is NOT due before the March Parent/Teacher Conferences.

Remember: If you are absent from my class, your makeup work is 45 minutes of working on your essay at home on myaccess.com.

Star Search worksheet, label constellations using cursive, correct spelling, capital letters where needed, name and nickname. You may come in and borrow a Stargazer or use the internet at home. Due to correct/turn in March 2nd. ***Just another reminder, Adventure Book Report/February Calendar, both signed by a parent, due March 1st. I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY BOOK REPORT/CALENDAR after that because grades were cut on February 25th. The only reason I am putting these on the report card is to IMPROVE INDEPENDENT READING GRADES for report cards. Also be reminded, book reports no longer are written on the form given in class. Book reports are to follow the same format, with exception of "Write about the plot" being changed to "Summarize the Book". This is to be typed, double-spaced, and 14 font. This has been talked about for the past two weeks in class.

Again -- a reminder that all work is due Thursday. If you have questions, ask me tomorrow. Please come in during recess or lunch for help if you need it. Mrs. Coombs

Social Studies: Work on your ancient Rome video questions. Remember that this "assignment" is actually an open book test due next Wednesday. Bring your progress note tomorrow if you forgot today. Make sure that all of your missing work is turned in tomorrow. (myth, comprehension). For those students who are redoing their map, remember that it's due sometime before next Friday. (Color the water carefully as instructed, label neatly, and color water only around the land- not around the edge of the map. Color the land neatly in one direction. Remember the little tricks that we've talked about and the common mistakes to watch out for and not repeat.)

Language Arts:
"How To Handle A Bully" Essay Due: 2/28. We are finished working on the essay in class. Students will need to continue working on them at home to keep improving their scores. On February 28, I will record the scores.

Oral Poem Performance of "Don't Quit" Due: 2/15. Students will be graded, so remember to practice it "Loud, Slow, and Clear." Especially SLOW!!!

Because we took some time in writing class to record what the students are observing in their microbiology class experiment,I still have a few students who need to give their poems. We will finish up the poems next Tuesday.

"Causes of Good Grades" Due: 2/28. We will be working on this essay in class next week. After that, it will be the students' responsibility to keep working on their essay at home to bring up the scores.

Remember: If students are absent from my class, they need to makeup the missed class time working on their essays at home on myaccess.com, which is 40-45 minutes. Several students have been assuming that because I don't hand them a worksheet,
they don't have any makeup work. Their makeup work is on-line.

Reading: Today the extra credit was due, not much turned in...Oh well, students must have been happy with their grades. Stargazing vocab/spelling test was given today. Those vocabulary cards need to go in their science binder for continued use with Mrs. Coombs. Bring Stargazing reading packet to class on Tuesday. Comprehension test on Thursday, 2/24. Remember, book reports are due, typed only, on March 1st. No late work will be accepted because of report card deadlines.

Students had fun working with candy hearts today for math. They estimated, calculated, and made a graph. They also had fun in music singing and playing the boom whackers.
